Over the past 40 years, arts impresario Michael Leslie MFA has amassed an impressive career in the performing arts sector in Australia.
He was founding member of the National Aboriginal & Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) NSW before moving to the US to further his training with the world-renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in New York. He graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Upon returning to Australia, Michael established performing arts institutions including Black Swan Theatre Company (BSTC), Marrugeku Physical Theatre Company, Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) QLD and Michael Leslie Foundation for the Arts (MLFA).
He also designed and delivered education and training programs for the BSTC and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Michael completed a Masters in Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts (COFA) UNSW Sydney in 2018.
“Michael has an enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm and a great vision for the training of Aboriginal people an extremely gifted dancer and choreographer an indication of the high regard in which Michael is held is that both the State and Federal Ministers for the Arts have invited him to sit on their arts advisory panels.”
(Janet Homes à Court, Philanthropist and Fellow founding partner of Black Swan Theatre Company)
“I was 17 when I met Michael. With his guidance and mentorship, I began a new path in life I thought I could only ever dream of. It feels like I was given a second chance. Michael Leslie changed my life.“
(Amy Hammond, student and WAAPA graduate)
“Michael Leslie is a unique artist who has committed himself to the development of his people across the entire nation a powerful personality who has fought for the empowerment of his people to manage their own destiny Leah Purcell is just one such success.”
(General Manager, Black Swan Theatre Company, 2001)
His integrity is founded with his honesty, his purpose in making a positive and essential contribution to society and his passion for building the capacity and pathways for young aboriginal people. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever encountered, and he has been the founder of many programs, companies and initiatives that continue to this day. This is a testimony to his integrity and commitment to the arts and building hope in disadvantaged communities.
(Jessica Machin, West Australian Ballet)
As stunningly innovative as the concept of the musical itself is the choreography by Perth-based Michael Lesli, who is also in the cast. Leslie has combined traditional Aboriginal and contemporary dance in a way that has not been seen on the mainstream stage before.
I also acknowledge the original founder of ACPA, Michael Leslie. Without Michael's vision, passion and determination to establish ACPA, none of us would be here today.
(Rob Doran, Training Director, ACPA)
The impact of the Michael Leslie program is consistent with much of the literature on the positive impact of young people’s involvement in the performing arts on their self-esteem, confidence, learning, and motivation.
The evidence gathered from participants and those connected to the participating schools found that participation in the program can be a transformative experience that brings about significant changes in students’ lives.
